Magnolia to Fight Against Bad Breath

A scientific study has highlighted that the bark of magnolia would fight against bad breath so much better than mint.

The research was conducted by the American company Wrigley (among other manufacturers of chewing gum Freedent) showed that the extracts of magnolia bark can fight very effectively against halitosis and bacteria that cause tooth decay. The study is published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry .

Bad breath is often due to bacteria in the oral cavity. Species such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum or Streptococcus mutans are natural inhabitants of the oral cavity and often cause bad breath. Most products to fight against bad breath only mask odors, so as to fight effectively against bad breath should kill the bacteria.

The magnolia bark is known in traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese otamment fight against anxiety, nervousness, sleep disturbances or even a fever and headache. . In this study the researchers tested the antibacterial properties of magnolia bark (and its active ingredients and the magnolol honokiol).

The results showed that in vitro (culture dish) magnolia bark reduced the number of bacteria of 99.9% in 5 minutes.

In vivo tests on human volunteers, have also tested positive. A vial containing 0.2% peppermint extract of magnolia bark reduced the number of bacteria in saliva of approximately 60% after half an hour while a single peppermint does not reduce the number of bacteria contained in saliva of about 3%.

The authors conclude that the bark of magnolia incorporated in chewing gum and mints are an effective way to fight against bad breath. Do not be surprised to see blooming around chewing gum and other mints containing magnolia bark extracts.
