Infant, the same as the adult, may also have bad breath problems, only the reasons that cause infant bad breath differ. So, what is the causes of infant bad breath ?
1. Infection
If your baby’s mouth or throat is affected by infection which is caused by bacteria, as we all known that bacteria can releases an unpleasant smell, then infant bad breath produced.
2. Colds, swollen tonsils
Colds, swollen tonsils easy cause the saliva on the mouth dry out, however, saliva is the natural enemy of bacteria, without the saliva, the bacteria can reproduct rapidly, which also lead to infant bad breath.
3. Mouth breathing
Mouth breathing may be because of nasal respiratory ways blocked caused by sinusitis or other conditions, or just for the bad habit. Breath through the mouth, leading to mouth dryness and the multiplication of the oral bacteria, which also leading to infant bad breath.
4. Thumb Sucking
it is not uncommon for babies to suckle on their thumb, suckling the thumb the mouth becomes dryer, allowing the bacteria to accumulate and grow, cause infant bad breath.

As given, infant bad breath is usually caused by mouth drying. So to prevent or cure infant bad breath, the main goal is to lessen the number of mouth bacteria and increase saliva.
- To decrease the bacteria is to teach your child the proper brushing technique. Make after meal brushing a habit as this will help eliminate the infant bad breath-causing bacteria present in your child’s mouth.
- To increase saliva, is to not eat too much dry food and drink plenty of water.
