Drinking Yogurt to Prevent Bad Breath
April30th,2010Drinking yogurt can prevent bad breath, reduce the secretion of hydrogen sulfide and decrease the incidence of plaque and gingivitis.
March 10, the International Dental Research Association Annual Meeting held in the city of Baltimore, at which Japanese scientists published their latest research results. Their experiments showed that yogurt can remove bad breath, reduce the secretion of hydrogen sulfide, but also can reduce plaque and gingivitis incidence.
Bad breath is caused by volatile sulfur compounds produced by anaerobic bacteria at the base of the tongue, which compound called hydrogen sulfide causes your breath to smell like rotten eggs.
At the experiment, experts selected 24 volunteers, and every one of them had exactly the same oral hygiene, diet and medication to take aspects of health guidance. The first phase of the study, volunteers were asked not to consume yogurt or products containing streptococci and lactobacilli, such as cheese and pickled vegetables. The second phase, volunteers were asked to drink six weeks continuous yogurt twice a day, each 90 grams. Finally, researchers from volunteers collecting samples of saliva and the tongue surface, and measuring the concentration of sulfides in their mouth.
The results showed that volunteers who have bad breath, his mouth a decrease of 80% hydrogen sulfide content. One of the project researchers, Tsurumi, Professor of Microbiology, University before Tianxin Zi said: “The two yogurts per day can eliminate bad breath.”
In addition, compared with before, the volunteers who have bad breath after taking a yogurt, its mouth plaque and gingivitis was significantly improved symptoms. However, the number of bacteria that they have no significant change occurred.
Tor this, the Forsyth Institute in Boston, a senior fellow at the Institute of Molecular Genetics Bruce J · Paster that researchers may not have looked in all the oral bacteria. He said: “oral microorganisms and their metabolic products are the chief culprit in causing bad breath. They infer from the theory is correct. Because the odor-causing species may have been some yogurt in the ‘good’ species replaced. ”
Former Tian Xinzi explained that consumed yogurt test is specifically for the production of the study, compared to the general yogurt products, the yogurt contains material cited fermentation of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. Therefore, the difference between the two is that the fermentation process the different types of bacteria.
